Fire Retardant MDF | 4mm - Class B
Specifications
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is a commonly used particle board. It is made by mixing wood fibres, waxes and resins then hot pressing it to different thicknesses. Its main advantage compared to other particle boards and timbers is its clean finish and lack of natural imperfections. Additionally, our MDF boards are FSC Certified, making them extremely environmentally friendly. Due to its dense fibre body, MDF remains strong and holds its form if installed correctly. With massive stocks available, you can always rely on BuildersMerchant.com for all your MDF needs.
Practical uses of the Fire Retardant MDF are being installed in buildings with high capacity, this includes but is not limited to offices, schools, hospitals and cinemas. It's fire retardant properties add an extra desirable quality above standard MDF material. Because our MDF is manufactured without grain or knots, it’s easy to apply paints and veneers to its face side for full customisation. This smooth surface also contributes to the ease of cutting screwing and gluing of the boards, as well as making them easy to clean and maintain.
Our Fire Retardant MDF complies to the FR Euro Class B fire safety regulations, guaranteeing your own safety and that of your project.
Our Fire Retardant MDF is available in a variety of thicknesses (6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 25mm) and multiple sizes. We can also cut any piece of MDF to your required size or pack together as many sheets as you need to complete your project. Delivery is offered or collections can be made from our depot for savings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the thickness?
4 mm.
What does “fire retardant” mean in MDF?
It's MDF that’s treated or manufactured to slow the spread of fire and withstand higher heat exposure.
Where is this MDF best used?
Interior partitions, decorative panels in commercial buildings, enclosures, or areas needing added fire safety.
Can it be painted or finished?
Yes — behaves like regular MDF once treated, so you can prime, paint, laminate or veneer it.
Is it structural?
Not usually — it's designed for safety attributes not heavy loads.
Is it moisture resistant?
No — it still needs to be used in dry, interior settings unless otherwise specified.
How should it be cut & handled?
Use fine blades, support sheet when cutting, seal edges if exposed.
Will it degrade in fire or after time?
Over prolonged exposure heat may degrade it; it's a fire safety measure, not fireproof.
Does fire treatment affect gluing or screwing?
Sometimes — it may require stronger adhesives or pre-drilled holes; always test.
What maintenance is needed?
Avoid moisture and physical damage; repair surface coatings when necessary.
