Timber Gravel Boards 6x1 | 150mm x 22mm x 2.4m (8ft) - Product Video

Tanalised Treated 8ft Gravel Boards, our boards have undergone an extensive treatment process to ensure deep penetration into the timber cells, this ensures longer-lasting protection against fungal decay and insect attack.

Pressure-treated timber is leach resistant, ensuring a long and trouble-free service life in a wide range of conditions, and assured performance in sensitive environments.

Gravel Board serves the specific purpose of being attached to the bottom of a garden fence to raise it to a desired height, when the ideal height cannot be achieved with standard fence panels. Gravel Boards can also be used to correct uneven ground surface. Another purpose for these versatile boards is to provide a layer of protection between your fence posts and panels and the ground, this prevents the bottom of the posts and panels from rot, decay and ground burrowing pests. This will make your fence much more durable and resilient to environmental stressors. This includes providing a solid base so that the fence stays in tact during turbulent weather conditions. Gravel Boards are the first step in the installation of a long-life and high-quality fence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 2.4m timber gravel board used for?

A 2.4m timber gravel board is fixed at the base of a fence to lift fence panels or boards off the ground. It helps protect the main fence from moisture, soil and strimmer damage, extending the life of the fence line.

What are the dimensions of this gravel board?

This board is approximately 150mm deep by 22mm thick (commonly referred to as 6x1") and 2.4m long. It is sized to span between standard fence posts on many domestic fencing runs.

Is the timber gravel board pressure treated?

Gravel boards are typically pressure treated to help resist rot and decay when exposed to the ground and weather. Check the product details for exact treatment class and follow best practice for ground contact timbers.

Can I use this gravel board with both panel and closeboard fences?

Yes. Timber gravel boards are suitable for use below standard fence panels and closeboard fencing, creating a sacrificial barrier between the fence and the soil or gravel.

How do I fix a 2.4m gravel board to fence posts?

Gravel boards are usually fixed to the face of timber posts using exterior-grade screws or nails, or slotted into concrete posts with gravel board slots. Ensure all fixings are galvanised or otherwise corrosion resistant for outdoor use.

Can this timber gravel board be cut to shorter lengths?

Yes. The board can be cut with a hand saw or power saw to suit shorter bays or stepped fences. Any freshly cut ends should be retreated with an appropriate end-grain preservative to maintain protection.

Is this gravel board suitable for use as an edging?

It can also be used as a simple edging board for paths, borders or raised flower beds, provided it is adequately supported and treated. For retaining significant soil loads, use stronger, thicker timbers designed for retaining work.

How long will a treated gravel board last?

Service life depends on exposure, soil conditions and treatment type, but a properly installed and treated gravel board will typically last several years and significantly extend the life of the fence above.

Do timber gravel boards require maintenance?

Basic maintenance such as keeping soil and debris from building up against the board and reapplying fence treatments or stains when required will help maximise life. Inspect periodically for signs of damage or decay.

Can I paint or stain the gravel board to match my fence?

Yes. Once the treatment has dried, you can apply compatible fence paints, stains or oils to match the rest of your fencing. Always follow the coating manufacturer’s instructions regarding treated timber.
